Particle Separation in the Reticulo-rumen

چکیده

Examination of the partitioning of particles between the dorsal and ventral regions of the rumen and the buoyancy properties of the particles themselves gives quantitative support for a major role of mechanical entrapment in the dorsal raft in restricting the availability of particles for outflow from the ret iculo-rumen. The effect is greatest for large particles and diminishes with time after feeding.

The effect of size and density on mean retention time of particles in the gastrointestinal tract of sheep.

The selective retention of particles in the reticulo-rumen and in the gastrointestinal tract distal to the reticulo-rumen was studied in fistulated sheep maintained on a roughage diet. Polyethylene glycol and plastic particles of different lengths (1 and 10 mm) and densities (0.92, 1.03, 1.22 and 1.44 g/ml) were either fed or were introduced into the omasum. The mean retention time in the retic...

Effects of experimentally-impaired reticular contractions on digesta passage in sheep.

The aim of the study was to evaluate the functional role of reticular contractions for digesta passage in sheep. Feed intake, mean retention time of fluid and plastic particles in the reticulo-rumen, rumen fluid volume, forestomach motility and particle size distribution in the faeces were determined in five rumen-fistulated sheep fed on hay ad libitum (Expt 1). The same variables were determin...

Effects of diet on short-term regulation of feed intake by lactating dairy cattle.

Physical and chemical characteristics of dietary ingredients and their interactions can have a large effect on dry matter intake (DMI) of lactating cows. Physical limitations caused by distension of the reticulo-rumen or other compartments of the gastrointestinal tract often limit DMI of high producing cows or cows fed high forage diets. Fermentation acids also limit DMI from a combination of i...

Early detection of bovine respiratory disease in young bulls using reticulo-rumen temperature boluses.

The use of reticulo-rumen temperature boluses to detect bovine respiratory disease (BRD) was investigated in young bulls following their entry into a fattening unit. Twenty-four bulls received a bolus at entry and were observed for 40 days. As soon as a reticulo-rumen hyperthermia (RH) episode was detected using the bolus, clinical examination was performed by a veterinarian and then repeated e...

Behaviour of solute and particle markers in the stomach of sheep given a concentrate diet.

1. Fistulated sheep given a concentrate diet were used to study the behaviour of solute ([51Cr]EDTA) and particle ([103Ru]phenanthroline) markers in the stomach under conditions of continuous feeding. 2. An injection of a mixed dose of [51Cr]EDTA and [103Ru]phenanthroline was given into the rumen and the time course of marker concentrations in the rumen and the abomasum was recorded. The curves...
